WriteOn will be interviewing Fellows to co-teach a creative writing class in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 at the High School of Economics and Finance or the George Jackson Academy (7th grade). Below is the  information for interested applicants and the call for applications, to be sent by April 1. An Information session will be held Wednesday, March 20, 6-7PM, room 407 — 66 W 12th street, 4th floor. Applicants must be enrolled students in 2024-2025.

2024-2025 Teaching Fellowship

WriteOn NYC! is a New School Fellowship program helping MFA students obtain hands-on, paid teaching experience while providing New York City children with high-quality education opportunities. This position is open to MFA students who will be enrolled as of 2024–25 at The New School.

Who are the students? The students are either the high school students of the High School of Economics & Finance or the young men at George Jackson Academy, the only need-blind independent middle school for boys in New York City. They are all motivated young writers who are eager to discuss and write poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and writing for children and young adults!

What do the Teaching Fellows teach? In pairs of two, Teaching Fellows develop a semester theme of their own design and teach weekly classes. They introduce literary role models and craft techniques to help unleash the poet, essayist, or fiction writer within. Helping kids find their voice improves not only their ability to succeed in school, but their social and personal well-being as well. At the semester’s end, WriteOn Fellows host a reading celebrating the students and their families through a hybrid and/or virtual format.

What do the Teaching Fellows learn? In a year-long pedagogy class, the Fellows will be introduced to best teaching practices, philosophies, and strategies to build an equalizing classroom. Fall and Spring Fellows workshop lesson plans together in a supportive environment. The pedagogy class is led by former WriteOn Teaching Fellow and current Associate Director Catherine Bloomer. Fellows will receive $3,000 in tuition remission. They will also receive five complimentary one-on-one coaching sessions through Daily Coaching LLC.

Our Ideal Applicant: A passionate, engaged MFA student who thinks out of the box, and loves literature and children. No teaching experience is required. Knowledge of contemporary, representative writers is, of course, a plus. Teaching Fellows must be available to teach once a week. They will be expected to attend all WriteOn NYC!-related events. There will also be opportunities for Fellows to gain experience in non-profit strategy, marketing, and fundraising.

How to apply: Using this form, you will need to provide the following:

1). A 500-word statement of interest. You may highlight your past experience or interest in teaching. Be sure to mention texts you might use in class, what kind of co-teacher you would best work with, and what genres or concepts you would feel comfortable teaching (as well as those that might be a challenge!). Please indicate your preference for high school or middle school.

2). Please provide a brief (500 words) teaching statement in which you discuss how you might teach a text and develop a writing prompt. Questions that you may wish to address in your statement include your target goal for the lesson, what kind of context you will provide for student writing, how you will structure the discussion, and what supplemental materials you might use. Consider the age of the students, of course.

3). A resume including your concentration.

All materials should be submitted using the google form. The application deadline is Monday, April 1st, 2024.
